American Angus Association verification program ends its fifth year with double-digit increases.

This month I wanted to share our end of the year stats with you, so the following is a news release provided by our Public Relations Department:

In a year where the cattle business saw continued downsizing, the American Angus Association's USDA Process Verified Program (PVP) experienced double-digit growth.

More than 700 Angus cattlemen enrolled 140,315 head in AngusSource during fiscal year 2010, which ended Sept. 30. That's a 14.3% increase in number of head enrolled in the program, which documents source, group age and Angus genetics.

"As AngusSource finishes its fifth year as a USDA PVP and gears up for the busy fall season, it continues to build upon the purpose from which it was developed — to add value to Angus-sired calves," Sara Snider, AngusSource director, says. "We've seen positive growth every year since the development of the program, and we look forward to steady increases in the future as producers prepare for fall-calving or marketing spring calves."

Producers with herds not meeting the genetic requirements of AngusSource can enroll in Gateway, the program's second-tier verification program documenting source and age.

Introduced in August 2009, more than 120 producers enrolled 19,258 head in Gateway during the program's first complete fiscal year.

"More producers are beginning to realize the benefits of the Gateway program in addition to AngusSource," Snider says.

gatewayRanchers using either AngusSource or Gateway can take advantage of the program's online listing service, which is available at www.angus.org/angussource and features stocker/feeder cattle and replacement females enrolled in the programs. The list is distributed to more than 600 potential buyers each week.

More than 47,000 head were marketed through the online listing site in FY 2010.

"We are starting to see more customers utilize the online listing service to market their calves," Snider says. "By documenting their vaccinations and other valuable management practices, we are able to help promote their calves and notify potential buyers of when and where the calves are selling."

AngusSource also continues to operate its feedyard umbrella, assisting farmer-feeders and commercial yards in targeting finished, age-verified calves for the Japanese export market.
