Association Perspective

Increase the value of your calves through AngusSource® Genetic.

Would you like to increase the value of your Angus-sired feeder cattle and replacement heifers on top of the great prices we’re currently experiencing? As you look forward to marketing your calves this fall, it’s time to consider enrolling your calves in the AngusSource® Genetic program through the American Angus Association to increase their value.

Commodity feeder-calf prices are at record-setting levels, which has been a welcome sight for the cow-calf producer, but what continues to drive consumers to purchase beef at these higher prices is a quality product. Feedlot operators want quality cattle to feed because they are rewarded in the form of premiums for top-grading fed cattle, especially cattle that meet the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) standards. Therefore, order buyers are willing to pay more for feeders they know have top-performing genetics that will also allow feedlot operators to meet the CAB standards.

Isn’t it time for you to capitalize on the investment you have made on elite Angus bulls for your commercial herd? AngusSource Genetic allows the cow-calf producer to do just that, capitalize on their Angus bull investment by increasing the value of their Angus-sired feeder cattle and replacement heifers. Value is increased by conveying genetic information about your calves to the potential buyers.

Enrolling in AngusSource is an easy process. To enroll, please contact Ginette Kurtz, director of commercial programs, at the American Angus Association. Ginette also has a column in this edition of the Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA that I would encourage you to read. Calves must be sired by registered-Angus bulls, but you do not need to match individual calves to their respective sire. Instead, you are enrolling a group of calves that have been born on your operation within a known calving window, sired by one or more registered-Angus bulls. AngusSource Genetic will provide you with tags at a low cost, depending on the type of tag, to identify your calves.

It’s hard to beat our protein competitors on price, but where we do beat them is on taste and an amazing eating experience. As you continue to improve your commercial cow-calf herd through the use of Angus bulls, which will provide the consumer this remarkable eating experience, it’s important for you to fully capitalize on your Angus bull investment through the use of AngusSource Genetic.
