Continuing education is a must for all ages.

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” This Thomas Edison quote I heard recently reminds me of the importance of the Future Angus Stockmen program geared toward youth who will become our next generation of beef producers.

Raising quality beef and being profitable takes hard work, patience and there are many monetary lessons that will be learned along the way. It can be a difficult career choice, but it can also be one of the most rewarding.

Internships are an awesome way for young people to decide if they have chosen the career path that best fits them. Young cattle producers who enter the business after an internship are more than confident of their chosen path. However, they may be returning to a family operation where they contribute more labor than decision making. Unfortunately, if a young producer is only a labor source and does not take part in some management, it can be tough for everybody.

Future Angus Stockmen is using tools from the American Angus Association that commercial Angus producers can use like AngusSource®, GeneMax® GMX) and Maternal Plus®. Allflex USA and the American Angus Association have teamed up to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a Future Angus Stockmen enrollee who plans to major in agriculture. The scholarship application will be posted on the commercial programs page Aug. 15, 2015, with instructions on how to apply. This scholarship will be awarded at the Angus Means Business National Conference & Trade Show in Overland Park, Kan., on Nov. 5, 2015.

I am so excited about this program because it gives the next generation of beef producers an opportunity to use the latest genomic technology for commercial producers, choose one of two recordkeeping programs and participate in a marketing program for Angus-sired calves at a super low cost.

If you want to enroll, download the enrollment form by visiting the commercial programs page or click on the “Future Angus Stockmen” tile on the homepage.

The program lets participants choose one of these enrollment options:

15-head program

30-head program

The American Angus Association is offering potential beef producers the opportunity to use GMX, choose between two recordkeeping programs and participate in a marketing program at reduced cost. Raising quality beef cattle is a challenging job. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the latest tools for commercial cattle.
