Angus Unveils Long-Range Plan

American Angus Association leaders reveal plan for growth, leadership and the industry’s first Genomic Education Center.

Anticipation was evident Monday, Nov. 7, as Angus breeders from across the country crowded into an Indianapolis, Ind., meeting hall for the American Angus Association’s 133rd Annual Convention of Delegates.

The meeting was the capping event of the three-day Angus Convention, where about 2,000 Angus seedstock and commercial producers, academia and allied industry met for educational sessions and thought-leading keynote lectures — all largely based on leadership, innovation and business culture. How many calves do I need to have to enroll in AngusSource®?

During the past year, AngusSource, a marketing program for any commercial producer who sells feeder calves and replacement heifers sired by a registered-Angus bull, has enrolled groups of calves ranging from six to 3,200 head. In 2015, Missouri was ranked sixth in the country for total cow numbers; more than 79% of producers in the state have fewer than 50 head of cows. The American Angus Association started the AngusSource program to assist producers in marketing their calves, regardless of herd size. Read more.

Enriquez Highlights Global Changes Occurring

Recognized futurist and thought leader Juan Enriquez challenges Angus breeders to “embrace change.”

Juan Enriquez was introduced as a “thought leader” and “someone who lives in the future” as he was called to the stage to deliver keynote remarks kicking off the second International Genomics Symposium, which was hosted Nov. 5 as part of the 2016 Angus Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The symposium was sponsored by Neogen GeneSeek Operations.

Enriquez is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on the profound changes that genomics and other life sciences will bring about in business, technology, politics and society.

Enriquez shared a series of examples — from Uber to three-D printers — that have proven to be industry game changers. Read more.

AgriLife Extension Helping Serve
Those Who Served Their Country

Agency programs support military families, caregivers, vets involved in agriculture.

With Veterans Day still on our minds, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is reminding current and former military that the agency has programs, materials and resources to help improve the quality of life for service members and their families.

Rachel Brauner, program coordinator for the agency’s Texas Military Program, said AgriLife Extension focuses on providing educational programs and resources to assist military veterans, current service members and their families as they face the many uncertainties of military life.

She said from 1987 to 2015 the agency and U.S. Army worked in partnership to meet the needs of Texas soldiers and their family members at Fort Bliss and Fort Hood. Read more.

USDA Expands Working-Lands Conservation Opportunities Through CRP

Small livestock operations are now able to enroll in CRP.

Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Deputy Undersecretary Alexis Taylor announced Nov. 4 that the USDA will offer a new Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Grasslands practice specifically tailored for small-scale livestock grazing operations. Livestock operations with 100 or fewer head of grazing dairy or beef cows (or the equivalent) can submit applications to enroll up to 200 acres of grasslands per farm. USDA’s goal is to enroll up to 200,000 acres. Read more.

Key to Healthful Holiday Eating

Tips to reduce calorie, sodium and fat intake in traditional holiday foods.

Overeating is as much a holiday tradition as watching football, so a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert has some tips on how to alter holiday recipes and make better food choices for healthier eating.

“Many times, the sugar, fat or sodium content of holiday recipes can be reduced without a noticeable difference in taste,” said Jenna Anding, AgriLife Extension associate department head, nutrition and food sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station. “In addition, there are several traditional holiday foods you can prepare in ways that don’t have a lot of extra fat or calories.” Read more.
