The Art of Greatness

Five Angus icons appear in new I Am Angus.

“Greatness is not something you can weigh or measure scientifically,” said Richard Halstead, portrait artist of the five Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery inductees featured in I Am Angus | The Art of Greatness. “Greatness is not fashion. It’s not fame either. It’s not someone who’s making the biggest splash, the biggest noise. It’s someone who has a lasting quality. It doesn’t have to be earthshaking. It doesn’t have to follow any preconceived concept of greatness. There’s no one strict formula for making greatness. It’s what people do with what they have.”

Keeping feed costs in check.

The winter season is well upon us in the northern half of the country. This also means feeding cattle every day because of the lack of green grass that we can’t wait to see in the spring. Feed is often the No. 1 expense in a beef operation. Here are some tips that might be helpful to control feed costs during tough times.

Navigating the H-2A Guest Worker Program

The H-2A visa program has experienced massive growth during the past decade.

U.S. farmers and ranchers discussed the current state of regulations governing the farm labor market and efforts to navigate it at a workshop during the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 100th Annual Convention. The H-2A visa program has experienced massive growth during the past decade, with the number of visas being issued to temporary workers rising 500%. Still, demand is surpassing supply, and navigating the system is a challenge.

Framework for Antibiotic Stewardship

Leading stakeholder organizations define and outline core components of stewardship to protect public health.

A group of major food companies, retailers, livestock producers, and trade and professional associations announced a comprehensive framework to strengthen stewardship of antibiotic use in food animals. The framework is the product of a two-year dialogue among stakeholders, moderated by Farm Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts, to ensure that antibiotics are used judiciously throughout production to protect animal and public health.

Researchers Zero In On Potential Therapeutic Target For Diabetes, Associated Diseases

‘Novel regulatory mechanism’ may be key to intervention.

A recent study led by researchers in Texas A&M University’s department of nutrition and food science shows how a novel regulatory mechanism serves as an important biomarker for the development of diabetes, as well as a potential therapeutic target for its prevention.
