The Source

AngusSource has a new process-verified claim — Angus-sired genetics.

AngusSource® has long been known for verifying Angus genetics in its USDA Process Verified Program (PVP). Last summer AngusSource had a makeover. The Angus-sired genetic component was taken out of the program. Beginning June 15, 2018, the AngusSource program verified group Age and Source (AS) with the option to add Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), AS-NeverEver 3 (AS-NE3), AS-Cattle Care and Handling (AS-CCH), and AS-Calf Management (AS-CM).

Producers can once again verify the Angus-sired genetic component through AngusSource! AngusSource Angus-Sired Genetics (AS-ASG) was added as the sixth AngusSource PVP point on March 15, 2019. Just like NHTC, AS-NE3, AS-CM and AS-CCH producers now have the option to add AS-ASG to their AngusSource enrollment.

The AngusSource verification certificate will indicate in what programs the calf crop is enrolled. Producers who choose to enroll in AS-ASG will see the registered Angus sire’s name and registration number on their AngusSource verification certificate. No expected progeny differences (EPDs) will be published on the certificate.

Packers and feedyards were the driving force to add AS-ASG back into the lineup, since many packers use AngusSource in their GLA. Standing for government live Angus, the GLA specifies the characteristics that make cattle eligible for approved beef programs claiming Angus influence. It may be included in program descriptions like this:

(a) are derived from cattle that meet the phenotypic or genotypic (AngusSource®) requirements of the USDA Specification for Characteristics of Cattle Eligible for Approved Beef Programs Claiming Angus Influence (GLA).

This means calves that are not fully black-hided but are enrolled in AS-ASG can qualify for black-hided packer premiums if it is written into the packer’s GLA.

Dual enrollment
Can you enroll your calves in Angus LinkSM and AngusSource Angus-Sired Genetics?

Yes, the Commercial Programs Department has definitely pulled out all the punches to provide producers who are loyal Angus bull customers the best pricing options for dual-enrolled calves.

Dual-enrolled Angus Link and AS-ASG calves will receive a matched pair tag set for each enrolled calf. The matched pair contains a white 840-coded AngusSource radio frequency ID (RFID) tag and the Angus Link neon green visual tag.

Enrollment in the AngusSource PVP will include at minimum group age, source and Angus-sired genetics. Producers have the option to add additional AngusSource verifications for which they qualify at the list price. Angus Link enrollment provides three scores that convey to buyers the potential value of the enrolled calves’ worth on the rail.

Producers will receive an Angus Link and AngusSource certificate along with online marketing support and our boots-on-the-ground field staff. Currently, we have two Angus Link field representatives covering the cattle-feeding states to educate and build demand for your enrolled calves.

Producers who choose to dual-enroll in Angus Link and AS-ASG will pay $5.25 per head and a flat fee of $125. This will provide a marketing opportunity that is unmatched by any other value-added program on the market today.
