Drought Mitigation Strategy

Early weaning can be beneficial strategy for drought.

Sometimes weaning calves earlier than traditional weaning dates can be beneficial for cows, calves and feed supplies during drought. To do this efficiently, however, a producer needs to plan ahead and be set up to do it properly. Reinaldo Cooke, associate professor in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, says early weaning was initially implemented so cows would have more time to recover and rebreed, particularly first-calf heifers.

Association Perspective

Heat stress in black cattle.

It’s hard to believe we need to be thinking about preparing our black-hided beef animals for the heat after one of the coldest winters here in the Midwest. However, since we have a vested interest in black Angus cattle, we need to pay particular attention to potential heat stress that can occur during the next few months.

Update on Hours-of-service Rules

Senators introduce the ‘livestock hauler’s wish list.’

Early this month, legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate aimed at reforming federal hours-of-service (HOS) rules in a way that ensures animal welfare, highway safety and the well-being of livestock haulers. S. 1255, the Transporting Livestock Across America Safely Act, was introduced by Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) with a bipartisan group of original cosponsors.

May is Beef Month

Beef farmers and ranchers make significant contribution to societal, economic fabric.

Many products get publicity and special recognition during the year, but if any product deserves its own month, it’s beef. That is why Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has declared May as Beef Month in the state. This declaration makes the 35th consecutive year beef has received this honor.

Measles on the Rise

Decline in measles vaccination is causing a preventable global resurgence of the disease.

In 2000, measles was declared to be eliminated in the United States, when no sustained transmission of the virus was seen in this country for more than 12 months. Today, however, the United States and many other countries that had eliminated the disease are experiencing concerning outbreaks of measles because of declines in measles vaccine coverage. Without renewed focus on measles vaccination efforts, the disease may rebound in full force, according to a new commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine by infectious diseases experts at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Penn State University College of Medicine’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
