AngusSource Adds New Process Verified Claim

AS-Angus-Sired Genetics is back on the roster for AngusSource.

Cattle producers can once again verify their Angus-sired genetics through AngusSource®, the USDA Process Verified Program (PVP) from the American Angus Association®. AS-Angus-Sired Genetics (AS-ASG) was added as the sixth AngusSource PVP point March 15, 2019. AS-ASG, verifying calves are sired by 100% registered Angus bulls, joins Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), AS-NeverEver3 (AS-NE3), AS-Cattle Care and Handling (AS-CCH) and AS-Calf Management (AS-CM) as AngusSource enrollment options. As the program’s base PVP, all calf crops are automatically enrolled into group age and source.

In The Cattle Markets

Fed-steer marketings ramp up seasonally.

Steer slaughter has begun to ramp up, seasonally, during the last month. Slaughter is up about 9% from mid-March to mid-April. The almost 30,000-head-per-week increase is relatively close to the increase in slaughter seen during the last five years, on average, and last year.

The Source

I want my coffee.

Mmmm, I love the smell of coffee brewing. It makes me happy, and sometimes it can pull me out of a funk depending upon the problem. Routine always seems to help me a little when the road of life throws me curves and potholes. Sometimes, though, I just need to break out of my comfort zone and head down a different road.

New Angus Brand at Walmart

Walmart to create Angus beef supply chain.

Walmart announced its entry into the beef industry, developing an end-to-end supply chain for Angus beef.

The retailer has been working to improve the quality of its food offerings, with its fresh division and meat department at the forefront of the effort.

The Link

A little bit can go a long way.

“Adding value” is a term I feel is used more frequently today than ever. Maybe it isn’t used any more than it was in the past, but we see it more often while scrolling the internet. Michael Boland, an adjunct faculty member at Kansas State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics, explained value-added agriculture well in an article written for the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center: “In general, adding value is the process of changing or transforming a product from its original state to a more valuable state.”

Record April Feedlot Inventories

The average level of feedlot inventories the past year is just shy of a record level.

The latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Cattle on Feed report pegged April 1 feedlot inventories at 11.96 million head, 102% of last year and a record April level for the data series, which started in 1996. The 12-month moving average of feedlot inventories is just slightly less than the record annual moving average in January 2007, meaning that the average level of feedlot inventories the past year is just shy of a record level.
