Weaning tips

No Bawl Babies Here

Readers share their tips for weaning calves.

"The traditional weaning process is difficult for the cow and the calf because of physical and psychological stresses to both,” says Bob Nusbaum, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. “The cow experiences an uncomfortable udder, and she misses her calf. The calf is generally locked in a lot without grass, is [given] an unfamiliar diet and misses mom. This causes lots of noisy bawling.”

Association Perspective

Feeder-calf sale observations.

August is winding down, fall is rapidly approaching, and the summer feeder-calf season is more than two-thirds complete. The fall bull sale season is right around the corner. With cooler temperatures this summer, many producers in this region are just beginning to wrap up the first cutting of hay, getting the bales into stack yards.

Reliable and Consistent

Jerry Bohn to receive FQF Industry Achievement Award.

When the opportunity knocked the first time, cattle feeder Jerry Bohn said “no.”

“I turned the Pratt job down once, before we made the decision to come here,” he says. With a young family and a career at CattleFax, “it was a hard move.”

When they did move, they thought it would be for five or six years. Now, after 34 years at the helm, it’s hard to separate Bohn from Pratt Feeders. Both are known for being reliable and consistent.

Safe Water

Multiple ways to disinfect drinking water in an emergency.

The water supply for my household has been disrupted twice this summer due to historic rainfall levels, leaving us faced with boil alerts due to floodwaters. Since our power was also out because of the storms, we had to buy bottled water instead. Is there any other way to clean the water in a situation like that?

Aging in Place: Growing Older at Home

There are plenty of resources available for living out the dream of staying home as you age.

“The stairs are getting so hard to climb.”

“Since my wife died, I just open a can of soup for dinner.”

“I’ve lived here 40 years. No other place will seem like home.”

These are common issues for older people. You may share the often-heard wish, “I want to stay in my own home!” The good news is that with the right help, you might be able to do just that. Staying in your own home as you get older is called “aging in place.” This article contains suggestions to help you find the help you need to continue to live independently.
