Timing and Costs of Marketing Cull Cows

Strategies offered to offer the best welfare and garner profit out of cull cows.

Many producers do a good job of raising calves and taking care of cattle, but marketing is often the weakest part of their program.

    Mark Sims

    Association Perspective

Use the tools available to draft your best team.

August is winding down, fall is rapidly approaching, and the summer feeder-calf season is more than two-thirds complete. The fall bull sale season is right around the corner. With cooler temperatures this summer, many producers in this region are just beginning to wrap up the first cutting of hay, getting the bales into stack yards.

    15-Year Climb

Record supply allows partners to meet consumer demand.

Economic incentive is a powerful thing. It directs ranch-level decisions and points an industry in a specific direction.

Financial reward kept cattlemen on the path toward higher quality and led them to produce record amounts of Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand product in the 2019 fiscal year (FY) that ended Sept. 30.

    Two New Northern Regional Managers

Regional managers hired for Northwest and Northeast regions.

The American Angus Association has named regional managers for two of its 13 regions. Jared Patterson, Middleton, Idaho, will serve the Northwest Region, including Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Reese Tuckwiller, Lewisburg, W.Va., will serve the Northeast Region composed of Delaware, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

    Climate Change Caution

Planting a trillion trees will not halt climate change.

A group of 46 scientists from around the world are urging caution regarding plans to address climate change through massive tree planting. Publishing a message of concern in the journal Science, they warn that planting trees in natural grasslands will destroy plant and animal habitat and it will not sequester enough carbon to compensate for fossil fuel emissions.

    Innovation Brings Profit

Feeding Quality Forum speakers encourage new thinking.

The cattle industry needs to make some bold, creative changes to ensure its viability. That was the wakeup call from speakers at the Feeding Quality Forum Aug. 27-28 in Amarillo, Texas. Persistent problems may require new approaches.

    Video Game Husbandry

Teaching animal science through interactive gaming.

For students studying animal science, interactive gaming can now help introduce concepts of working with cattle before they’ve even stepped foot in a pen or pasture.

    Alternative to Insulin

Alltech Life Sciences announces breakthrough in diabetes treatment.

There are an estimated 450 million people living with diabetes worldwide according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), with a staggering 53% increase expected by 2045. In a breakthrough that may offer hope to those affected by the chronic disease, researchers with Alltech Life Sciences have developed a possible alternative to current insulin treatments. The compound, called NPC43, is effective when administered either orally or by injection.
