Preweaning Nutrition

Cost-effective and Balanced Cow Rations

Use a feed analysis to calculate protein costs on a per-ton basis.

Hay season provides a feed inventory analysis opportunity for each producer. Beyond “how many bales,” the inventory should look at the quality of the feed in storage. The big question should be, “Do I have enough bales to create a balanced ration, which meets the nutritional requirements of my cow herd through each stage of production? And what kind of supplementation (if any) will be needed?”

A Proactive Approach to Deworming

Consider your deworming goals and refresh your practices if needed.

“It’s important to recognize that producers are doing so many things right,” says Dan Cummings, professional service veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim. “A sustainable approach to deworming isn’t about correcting wrongs. It’s really about stewardship and building toward a sustainable future.”

Asian Longhorned Ticks and Theileria: What You Need To Know

A solid tick-control program is one of the best things a producer can do to minimize the risk of the Asian longhorned tick and Ikeda.

The Asian longhorned tick has been identified in 11 states across the United States in the past five years and continues to spread. With the new tick species comes the tick-borne disease, Theileria orientalis (Ikeda genotype) “Ikeda,” which can be fatal to cattle.

Cattle are amazing creatures because they can turn grass into protein, but how they get that grass varies across the country.

“When forage is limiting, every bite counts,” says nutritionist Brian Fieser.

BRD Battle Plan: Provide Powerful Protection on All Fronts

Fighting BRD requires a multifaceted approach.

The fight against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a never-ending battle on a beef operation. It’s frustrating, costly and the causes can be extremely hard to understand.
