Early Buy-in

2022 BIF Commercial Producers of the Year plan to transition the ranch to the next generation.

In agriculture, most kids help on the ranch or farm while they are growing up, but once they graduate high school, their fit in the operation becomes less clear. For the Rezac family of Onaga, Kan., winners of the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) 2022 Commercial Producer of the Year honors, having the next generation come back with a defined role is part of the business plan.

Association Perspective

Ditch the filing cabinet.

For decades, registered Angus bull buyers have received registration certificates of bulls purchased from their seedstock supplier, and still do today. In my travels, I’ve seen many binders and filing cabinets full of such registration papers. Each breeding season, those papers are probably reevaluated to see which bulls best fit various groups of heifers or cows they are about to be exposed to. They may even be pulled to enroll a set of calves into the AngusLinkSM feeder-cattle program to document the genetics that represent the calf crop.

Angus Foundation Awards Young Commercial Cattlemen Scholarships

Scholarship program supports students using Angus genetics in commercial operations.

The Angus Foundation recently awarded the Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship to four outstanding youth in the beef industry. This scholarship is unique from others offered by the Angus Foundation as it aims to support students outside of the seedstock industry. To apply, youth and/or their parents/guardians must use Angus genetics in their breeding program.

Spending Time to Make Money

Colorado producers take a wide view of industry, raise value-added calves.

Pat and Robin Karney’s banker didn’t mean to jinx them, but it may have felt that way in hindsight.

They were selling their family feed business, had leased some ranches and owned a small one, but they were trying to put together something more complete. A customer had his own ranch up for sale and suggested the family make an offer.
