Trace mineral injectable
Multimin USA Inc. has launched MultiMin® 90 for use in beef and dairy cattle. The new product contains 50% more zinc per milliliter (mL) than MultiMin® 70, which will be replaced by the new product at no increased cost to the veterinarian or producer.
The improvement to zinc levels was warranted, the company says, by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) serum studies that indicated that slightly more than 60% of cattle operations evaluated in 23 leading cattle-producing states proved to be moderately to severely deficient in zinc.
The new product provides zinc, manganese, copper and selenium in a readily available form as an injectable, which bypasses any antagonists that may tie up oral minerals, and can be timed prior to periods of higher trace mineral demand, such as calving, breeding, shipping or introduction to the feedyard.

Dual-action antibiotic and anti-inflammatory
Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health has introduced Resflor Gold,® an injectable broad-spectrum antibiotic (florfenicol) and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (flunixin meglumine) that the company says works against the three major bacterial causes of bovine respiratory disease (BRD), Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni.
One subcutaneous (sub-Q) dose is all that is required, according to the release, to reduce the fever associated with BRD and to see a difference six hours after treatment.

Metabolic plant stimulant
Biagro Western has secured exclusive international rights to market Take-Off, a metabolic plant stimulant that was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. After seeing the results of field studies conducted by Los Alamos, the company then spent four years doing additional field research in Europe, followed by additional testing in the United States.
Field tests show that Take-Off reduced nitrogen inputs by 25%-35%. The plant stimulant can be applied as a spray to a plant's leaves, using traditional sprayer equipment, or to the plant's root system.
The product will be sold initially as an additive in Nutri-Phite fertilizers under the brand line name Nutri-Phite "Ultra," and is now available through agri-chemical dealers.

Herbicide for broadleaf control
Nufarm Americas Inc. has announced the addition of Edict® 2SC IVM Herbicide to its Industrial and Vegetation Management (IVM) portfolio. Edict, a product of Nichino America Inc., is a patented protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitor that provides postemergent control of a wide range of broadleaf weeds.
The product is used at extremely low use rates [0.7-4 ounces (oz.) per acre], and works as an excellent tank mix partner with products such as 2,4-D for broadleaf weed control in desirable grasses, as well as glyphosate and other nonselective products for enhanced speed and efficacy in industrial bare-ground treatments. Because of its unique mode of action, the product can be an effective resistance management tool for species such as kochia, Russian thistle and redroot pigweed.
The product can be used on non-crop and industrial vegetation sites such as railroads, roadsides, utility rights of way and similar areas. A supplemental label allows use on pastures and rangelands and can offer enhanced performance and rapid burn-down on species such as leafy spurge and Canada thistle when tank-mixed with other pasture and rangeland products.

Hay and forage probes
AMS Inc., American Falls, Idaho, is featuring in its upcoming 2010 catalog hay and forage probes that are ideal for obtaining 12-inch (in.) or 24-in. representative core samples for quick visual inspection and laboratory analysis.
The basic model is a ⅞-in. OD probe with a heat-treated serrated tip and chambered extraction slot. The cores from this sampler are emptied directly into a bucket or sample bag.
The deluxe model includes a (1 liter) plastic canister capable of holding approximately 20 cores. The canister is easily removed by unscrewing the top cap with built-in drill adapter. The sample can be emptied into a larger collection bag or the canister can be sealed with two plastic end caps and sent to the lab for analysis.
Both models require ½-in. chuck drills for operation (24V recommended).

Handheld windrow hay moisture tester
John Deere Merchandise has introduced its new Windrow Hay Moisture Tester to allow hay producers to check hay moisture levels quickly at several places in the field to determine if it's time to bale.
The tester measures hay from 13% to 70% moisture content within 2%-4% accuracy. Producers simply add loose hay to a 5-gallon bucket (not included), insert the handheld tester and press a button. The moisture level of the hay sample is then digitally displayed within 30-60 seconds. The tester is available from local John Deere dealers.
