Prevent bovine pneumonia

Novartis Animal Health has introduced Nuplura™ PH, a new vaccine for beef and dairy cattle that the company says provides fast-acting protection against bovine pneumonia caused by Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica.

M. haemolytica, formerly known as Pasteurella, is a highly transmissible bacteria and a leading cause of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex. The new vaccine differs from other vaccines because of the cellular technology used to purify antigens in the vaccine.

The company says it is the first and only U.S. cattle vaccine developed with recombinant technology that combines extracted and purified outer membrane proteins with molecularly prepared leukotoxoid. The new vaccine does not contain the cellular debris and endotoxins found in whole-cell pneumonia vaccines, which can interfere with the immune response and cause more severe reactions.

The new vaccine provides immunity within 10 days after vaccination, according to the release. Extensive field studies have demonstrated the vaccine is safe for calves as young as 28 days. A booster dose can be administered prior to periods of stress or elevated risk of exposure.

Broad-spectrum protection

Novartis Animal Health has announced BRD Shield,™ a new modified-live vaccine (MLV) developed to protect nonpregnant beef and dairy cattle against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex. The new vaccine provides broad-spectrum protection against leading viral diseases that contribute to BRD, including bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) Type 1 and Type 2, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza 3 (PI3) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV).

The new vaccine is the first and only MLV that offers antigens for protection against the noncytopathic (NCP) biotype of BVD Type 1 and BVD Type 2, according to the release. The NCP BVD biotype accounts for 90%-95% of clinical disease outbreaks and is responsible for 100% of persistently infected calves, according to a study at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Extensive field testing showed that the new vaccine was proven safe for calves as young as four weeks of age, with no adverse effect on meat or carcass quality when used as directed. The label indicates beef cattle should receive their initial dose at weaning, followed by a booster four weeks later. In herds at risk for BRSV, animals should be revaccinated three or four weeks after the first dose. Calves vaccinated prior to six months of age should be revaccinated after six months of age. The new vaccine is labeled for use in healthy, nonpregnant cattle.

Weighing options

Tru-Test has introduced the EziWeigh5 and EziWeigh6 scale indicators for producers who want to quickly and easily collect weights for their animals.

Both models feature a 1.4-inch (in.) display with a super-bright white LED backlight to make them viewable in all conditions, from the brightest daylight conditions to failing light or in dark sheds. The scale indicators are 100% water- and dust-proof with double-walled construction for extra protection. The EziWeigh6 also has rubber corner buffers for extra protection.

Both scale indicators are compatible with all load sensors currently available in the company's range. No calibration is required, as the indicators recognize the load-sensing device when it is connected.

The EziWeigh6 is USB compatible and can plug directly into a desktop computer or laptop, and comes equipped with RS232 communications for compatibility with the company's XRP eID panel readers and with other brands of panel readers, including stick/handheld readers. It also enables three-way manual sorting by weight. The EZiWeigh6 holds a memory capacity of 50 weighing sessions and 10,000 records. It enables visual ID entry of up to 13 characters, which can be a cross-reference with eID.

The indicators have an auto zero that ensures that any accumulation of animal dirt on the platform or crate is zeroed out on both models. When a stable weight is reached, the bright red light makes it easy to identify for both models. On the EziWeigh5, a fine mode is available as an on/off option that allows weighing in a finer resolution for lower weights. For both models, the indicator automatically turns off after 15 minutes of no activity to save the battery, which can be charged with the 110 V charger in three hours.

The EziWeigh6 has an alphanumeric keypad for visual ID (VID) entry. It features hands-free weight recording, the company's software for importing and exporting data and auto incrementing and auto prefixing.
