Macrolide antibiotic to manage BRD

Merck Animal Health has announced the U.S. approval of Zuprevo™ (tildipirosin), a novel, new macrolide antibiotic for the management of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) that the company says offers a combination of effectiveness and convenience.

The new antibiotic is indicated for the treatment of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle, and for the control of respiratory disease in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle at high risk of developing BRD associated with those bacterial pathogens.

According to the company's senior development manager, the new antibiotic gets its combination of effectiveness, bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity from its unique 16-membered, tribasic molecular structure. The macrolides inhibit protein synthesis at the ribosomal level. The company's studies have shown that tildipirosin is rapidly absorbed from the site of injection, reaching peak plasma concentrations in just 45 minutes, while also yielding higher and more persistent plasma concentrations.

The company says tildipirosin also has the lowest single-dose volume of any BRD treatment available, at 1 mL per 100 pounds (lb.) of bodyweight, subcutaneously (sub-Q), with a maximum injection volume of 10 mL per injection site. It's highly soluble and the formulation is easy to inject, even in cold temperatures, according to the release. To help producers remain flexible, tildipirosin also offers a withdrawal time at 21 days, as registered in the United States.

Weight indicators with connectivity, durability and versatility

Novarttis Cattle Vaccine Library appAvery Weigh-Tronix has introduced eight new indicators in its ZM Series. Available in two models, ZM301 and ZM303, and eight variants, the series provides an array of performance features and optimal flexibility.

The ZM301 is a simple-to-operate, basic weight-reading indicator, with high-speed value-capturing capabilities of up to 80 times per second. This model is also equipped with six operational keys, including zero, print, units, tare, select and F1, and offers built-in operational routines — enabling users to configure the device for individual weighing needs.

The ZM303 can store multiple tares and IDs in its internal memory, providing easy retrieval for future use. The indicator also features a numeric keyboard, as well as clearly displayed buttons for common weighing requirements such as counting, checkweighing and process control, allowing users to quickly switch between applications.

Standard options for the series include ethernet, USB ports and two RS232 serial interface ports, with analog output, USB device, current loop, RS485/RS42 and wireless connections also available. Each model can also be remotely activated via push buttons or foot controls.

The ZM indicators are available in multiple enclosure options including IP69K-certified stainless steel for maximum ingress protection in harsh indoor or outdoor applications; protective aluminum that delivers durability in office environments; and stainless steel panel mounts that are ideal for control room applications.

The series also offers two displays. The IBN display is a nine-segment, high-contrast display that allows visibility in virtually any lighting while highlighting crucial information to reduce error and improve productivity. The TN display is available only on the ZM303 and consists of dark digits on a lighter background to minimize operator fatigue in applications subjected to direct sunlight or dim lighting.
