Angus Advantage

Improve Fertility, Overall Income

Understanding female reproduction accelerates positive momentum in the cow herd.

How do you get cattle to breed easily, calve early and display good reproductive performance? Positive momentum, says Bob Larson, a veterinarian with the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University. Good reproductive success this year sets a herd up for good reproductive success next year. Start by benchmarking your current situation and comparing to a desired goal.

Association Perspective

Why use an Angus bull?

What advantage does an Angus bull pose to a commercial setting? Is it the maternal side — his ability to propagate the mothering ability to raise a heavier weaned calf each year? Do we associate the Angus bull to the longevity and reliability to go out and perform his job day in and day out? Is it due to the market trend of needing more black-hided calves and what that signifies on the rail?

Tractors Require Extra Caution in Winter

Adjust tractor maintenance and driving practices for winter conditions.

Snow, ice and cold make operating a tractor more difficult and more dangerous, says Angie Johnson, North Dakota State University Extension farm and ranch safety coordinator. “Tractor operators should adjust their tractor maintenance and driving practices for winter conditions from start to finish. Problems and hazards are amplified by ice, snow and cold temperatures.”

Start the Year Right With Cattle Recordkeeping System

Identification opens the door to benchmarking herd performance and efficiency.

As the year ends, University of Missouri Extension Livestock Specialist Patrick Davis urges cattle producers to evaluate their recordkeeping system to determine if it was successful.

“Recordkeeping starts with proper cattle identification,” Davis says. Two nationally known ID systems are the four-digit system and the letter and three-digit system.
