Explore Your Potential
Association offers program designed for young commercial cattlemen.
To meet the needs of future cattle producers, the American Angus Association has launched a program — called Future Angus Stockmen — geared toward college-age or recent graduates who want to raise high-quality Angus-based commercial cattle. It’s intended to provide a fun, educational platform to learn about programs and services of the American Angus Association, network with other cattlemen who have similar interests and potentially earn scholarships in the process.
Through an informal mentorship program that will include educational materials, contact through the Association’s Commercial Programs Department and more structured educational programs in the future, participants will learn to:
- Use proven information such as expected progeny differences (EPDs) and dollar-value indexes ($Values);
- Incorporate DNA technology to make data-driven decisions;
- Develop a recordkeeping plan by using the Beef Record Service (BRS) or MaternalPlus® at a reduced cost for submitting data;
- Connect and share ideas with cattle producers from throughout the nation; and
- Use American Angus Association programs to benefit their commercial operations.
In partnership with Zoetis, the American Angus Association will offer those enrolled in the program a special, reduced rate for GeneMax® DNA tests. They will also receive complimentary enrollment in either AngusSource® or AngusSource Genetic — the Association’s marketing program for Angus-sired feeder calves and replacement females.
Thanks to funds provided by Allflex and Destron Fearing, participants will also have the chance to apply for scholarships if they are, or will be, enrolled in a two- or four-year college majoring in agriculture. Scholarship winners will be announced at the 2015 National Angus Convention & Trade Show.
