With dry weather and short pastures, cow-calf producers face tough culling decisions. One way to match cows’ needs to available grass is to sell cows. Give careful thought to which grass eaters go first, says Eric Bailey, University of Missouri Extension beef nutritionist. Under drought stress, identifying those cows becomes urgent.
“With where we are at in the growing season today, there are still many options for farmers who have a wheat crop that has failed,” says Ignacio Ciampitti, professor of agronomy at Kansas State University.
Many consumers want to buy locally produced beef, and University of Missouri (MU) Extension economists can help producers deliver. Beef producers who want to finish their cattle on their farms now have access to new resources from MU Extension beef specialists to determine their finishing budgets.

“The easiest way to describe [value-added programs] is like a stair step. To climb up the ladder, you have to climb the steps,” said Superior Livestock Representative Clint Berry. “You can’t go from ground floor to Step 5 without the others.”

The USDA Cattle on Feed report released on May 19 appears to be rather neutral with continuing evidence of the smaller numbers ahead.
