Study Shows Grid Pricing Has Boosted Cattle Profits, Improved Consumer Beef

K-State ag economists publish paper on trends, implications of marketing agreements.

Kansas State University (K-State) ag economists have completed a broad analysis of the effects of grid pricing in the cattle industry, concluding — among other findings — that producers and consumers have benefited from negotiated pricing agreements.

Market Closeout

The role of the market.

There are about as many opinions on marketing cattle as there are cattle producers. In many respects this is understandable; ranches don’t tend to fit into distinct boxes. A lot of variation exists in terms of genetics, management, scale and environment. Each of those factors has an effect on an individual operation’s marketing plan and goals.

Beef×Dairy Using Angus Genetics Gains Momentum

Angus-Holstein feeder calves are proving themselves in the feedlot.

Many dairies are now breeding some of their cows — the ones they don’t want replacement heifers from — to beef bulls, generally using semen from Angus bulls. The beef-on-dairy-cross calves are worth much more as day-old calves or as young calves from calf farms than straight-dairy calves, since the crossbreds feed out similarly to beef animals.

CAB Launches Direct-to-Consumer Program

Ranchers can leverage Certified Angus Beef logo to market beef directly to consumers.

Could your freezer beef carry the Certified Angus Beef® brand logo? Perhaps. With the launch of a new program, Angus farmers and ranchers have the option to market their beef directly to consumers as CAB product.

The Link

Enjoy the ride.

Ranchers tend to be a hard group to characterize. In many respects we are the most optimistic people in the world. With all the uncertainty that comes with dealing with Mother Nature and the volatility of today’s markets, you must have a positive outlook just to keep pushing forward sometimes.

In The Cattle Markets

The feed situation and its effect on expansion.

Beef cattle inventory levels have been expected to continue to remain low. Feed availability has been a limiting factor in recent years. Feed costs have also limited profits for cow-calf producers.
