Getting First-calf Heifers Rebred

A strategy offered to enhance longevity in first-calf heifers.

The 2-year-old year is the toughest time of a cow’s life. She’s raising her first calf, still growing, and needs enough nutrition and body condition to cycle on schedule after calving. Otherwise, she may end up open or calving late next year. It can be a challenge to get heifers rebred without losing ground in their calving schedule.

The American Angus Association recently made updates and an addition to its suite of economic selection indexes first released 15 years ago. These indexes, commonly referred to as dollar values ($Values) and established in 2004, were designed to make selection easier for bull buyers by allowing them to select for multiple traits at once based on a specific breeding objective.

The Memorial Day weekend was the unofficial beginning of grilling season, and a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert and a fire protection organization have some advice on outdoor grilling safety.

“While grilling is an enjoyable seasonal outdoor activity, people need to be aware of its potential dangers,” said Joyce Cavanagh, AgriLife Extension family and community health specialist, College Station.
